2. What is the nucleus of an atom?

The nucleus is the center of an atom.

It is made up of protons and neutrons.

 

3. What is nuclear energy?

Nuclear energy is the energy released from a nuclear reaction as a result of nuclear fission or nuclear fusion.

 

4. Where does nuclear energy come from?

  • Nuclear energy comes from the nucleus of an atom.
  • During nuclear fission of fusion there is a small loss of mass.
  • This mass is converted into vast amounts of energy.
  • Einstein's famous equation determines the amount of energy released.
  • E = mc2 where E = energy, m = loss in mass and c = the speed of light which is squared.

Note: The speed of light is 3 x 108 metres per second. In one second light can travel around the Earth's equator 7.5 times!

 

5. What is nuclear fusion? Where does it occur?

  • Nuclear fusion is the joining together or fusing of the nucleus of two atoms. 
  • Nuclear fusion occurs in the sun and the stars.
  • Hydrogen is converted to Helium through a series of nuclear fusion reactions.
  • Vasts amount of energy is produced in the process.

 

6. What is nuclear fission? Where does it occur?

  • Nuclear fission is the splitting apart of a large nucleus into two smaller nuclei.
  • Nuclear fission occurs in nuclear reactors.
  • Uranium ore provides us with an abundant source of nuclear fuel

 

7. What is a chain reaction?

  • A chain reaction occurs in nuclear fission.
  • One neutron splits apart the nucleus of an atom
  • Two smaller nuclei and three neutrons are produced
  • The process then continues exponentially

8. How does a nuclear reactor produce electricity?

  • A nuclear reactor uses a fuel such as uranium.
  • The rate of reaction is controlled by special rods.
  • Nuclear fission produces large amounts of heat.
  • The heat is used to produce steam.
  • The steam drives the electric turbines which produce electricity.
  • Nuclear wastes are also produced and need to be safely disposed.

12. Research the life of Tsutomu Yamaguchi (1916-2010)

 

Tsutomu survived two nuclear bomb blasts!

He was in Hiroshima for the first blast and was injured by the blast.

He then travelled to Nagasaki where the second bomb was dropped.

He lived to the age of 93.

The latest US Trident D-5 submarine lauanched missiles have a range of 12 000 km
